Description : Erect, tufted, non-rhizomatous, slender annual herbs with purplish fibrous roots; culms 5-15 cm tall, obtusely trigonous or subterete, whitish-green. Leaves few, basal, 1-6 cm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, filiform, apex acute, canaliculate, whitish-green; sheaths 1-2 cm long, light reddish-brown, lower sheaths bladeless. Inflorescence a pseudolateral head with 1-3 spikelets, reddish-brown; bracts 1-2, the lower bract leaf-like, erect, upto 4 cm long. Spikelets sessile, 3-5 x 2.5-3.5 mm, ovate-elliptic to oblong-elliptic, squarrose, obtuse, deeply red-brown with pale green awns, many-flowered. Glumes spirally imbricated, 1-1.5 x 0.5 mm (including awn), obovate, 3-5-nerved, truncate at awned apex. Stamens 1 or 2. Stigmas 3, recurved. Nuts c. 0.5 mm long. obovate, trigonous, pale brown, minutely puncticulate.
