Description : Erect, aromatic woody herbs, 1-1.5 m high, stem 4-angled, grooved on opposite sides, densely pubescent. Leaves 3-7 x 2.5-4.5 cm, broadly ovate to obovate, base turncate, margin coarsely serrate-crenate, apex acute, tomentose on both sides; petiole to 3 cm long. Flowers in axillary sessile clusters or in terminal interrupted spikes. Calyx campanulate; tube 4-5 mm long; lobes 5. c. 2 mm long, ovate, ciliate on margin. Corolla pale pink, 1-1.4 cm long, 2-lipped. Stamens 4, didynamous, exserted; filaments hairy; anthers of upper pair 2-celled, of lower 1-celled. Ovary 4-partite; style slender; stigma 2-fid; disc subentire. Nutlets 4, lenticular, reddish-brown.
 
Curated Medicinal Use / Activity : The whole plant is used, but especially the leaves and the roots. It is a powerful astringent, carminative, febrifuge and tonic. The plant is used in the treatment of rheumatism, colds, fevers, abdominal pain, skin sores, and snake bites. A decoction of the leaves is used as an antirheumatic and stomachic, and also to treat uterine infections, kidney gravel, swellings and hypertension. The juice of the leaves is given to children for colic, dyspepsia and fever caused by teething. Inhaling the vapour of the hot infusion induces copious perspiration. The essential oil distilled from the leaves is applied externally as an embrocation in rheumatic arthritis.
