A tufted sedge, briefly-rhizomed with closely-spaced culms, swollen at their base, rising to 30–40 cm high, of damp sites in savanna throughout the Region, and widespread in the Old World tropics.The rhizome with the swollen culm-bases, along with other similar Kyllinga species (K. erecta, K. pumila, K. squamulata), are sold in N Nigerian markets under the Hausa name turare meaning ‘scent’ for use in fumigation, to chew and for addition to food and medicine as a flavour. The taste is aromatic and slightly bitter. |
