| Description : | Scapigerous herbs; whole plant scabrous. Leaves radical, rossetted at base, 6-18 x 2-5 cm, obovate to oblong or oblanceolate, base attenuate, margin crenate, apex obtuse or broadly acute, strigose above; cauline leaves small, narrow, sessile, base amplexicaule. Heads, homogamous, non-rayed, sessile, aggregated in dense, stalked glomerules, substened by 3 ovate, reduced leaves. Involucral bracts 2-seriate, scarious. Flowers 2-5, bisexual. Corolla purple; tube 5-6 mm long, lobes 5. Stamens 5, auricled at base. Ovary 3 -4 mm, oblong; style arms subulate. Achenes 4-5 mm long, 10-ribbed. Pappus of 4-6 spiny bristles, c. 5 mm long. | |||||||||||||
