Description : Tufted annual with few–many crowded stems; stems 4–40 cm long, or total length 8–60 cm when including the bract, 0.4–2 mm thick, triangular to almost terete. Leaf-sheaths ending in minute lobes or well developed blades 10–30 cm long. Inflorescence lax with clusters of spikelets on branches of unequal length, or contracted to a pseudo-lateral globose cluster; major involucral bract 3–12 cm long, stem-like, shorter than the stem. Spikelets 4–10 mm x 2–2.5 mm, ovoid, acute, variegated grey, green and brown. Glumes c. 3 mm long, ovate, reddish brown or pale with reddish brown lines or patches; margin shortly hairy or glabrous; midrib green, excurrent in a short mucro. Perianth absent. Style with 3 branches. Nutlet 1–1.3 x c. 1 mm, broadly ovoid, triangular, transversely wrinkled, blackish when mature. Basal flowers often present and producing c. 1.5 mm long and wide almost smooth nutlets.
