Description : Annual or perennial herbs. Culms 40-140 cm high; nodes glabrous. Leaves 5-22 x 0.4-1 cm, elliptic-lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, base attenuate, apex setaceous; sheath to 7 cm long; ligule membranous. Inflorescence a false interrupted panicle, 5-40 cm long; racemes solitary from a peduncled, glabrous, pinkish spatheole. Spikelets 3-per raceme, 1 sessile, 2 pedicelled. Sessile spikelets 3-7 mm long, awned; lower male, upper bisexual; lower glume 3-7 x 1-2 mm, lanceolate, shortly bifid, margins narrowly winged in the upper half; upper glume 3-6 x 1-2 mm, boat-shaped, beaked, keeled. First lemma 2-4.5 x 0.5-1 mm, oblong-lanceolate, faintly 3-5-nerved. Palea equal to lemma, 2-keeled, 2-nerved. Stamens 3, anthers c. 1.5 mm long. Second lemma as long as the sessile spikelet, notched, 3-nerved; awn 5-12 mm long, glabrous. Palea 1-2 cx 0.5-1 mm, ovate, 2-keeled, hyaline. Stamens 3; anthers 2-3 mm long, cream in colour with violet margins. Ovary 0.5-1 mm, oblong; style c. 1.5 mm; stigmas 1.5-2.5 mm, pink, feathery. Sterile pedicelled spikelet 3-7 x 0.5-2 mm, lanceolate, shortly bifid, flat. Pedicelled spikelet 3-6 x 1-1.5 mm, oblong-lanceolate; pedicel 2-5 mm long, flat. Lower glume 3-6 x 1-1.5 mm, lanceolate, chartaceous. Upper glume equal in size and texture, ovate-lanceolate. Florets more or less similar to those of sessile spikelet; upper lemma entire, unawned. Flowering: August-November.
