Description : Large shrubs; branchlets pubescent, reddish. Leaves spiral, closely packed, to 18 x 2 cm, linear-oblong, acute at either ends, penninerved, covered with yellow scales below and pubescent along nerves; petiole 1 cm long, tomentose; stipule filiform. Flowers dioecious in axillary 10-15 cm long racemes. Male flowers 3 mm across, sepals 2-5, glabrous, ciliate along the margins, yellowish red; stamens many, free. Female flowers sessile, densely packed; bracts ovate; sepals 2 mm long, lanceolate, ciliate; ovary densely hairy; styles 3, spreading, linear. Capsule 5 mm across, globose, hairy.
 
Curated Medicinal Use / Activity : A root decoction acts as an emetic. A decoction of the leaves is used against itches. The stems and leaves are applied as a purgative. The leaves were used to blacken teeth and to fix loose ones. The pounded leaves and sometimes fruits are applied as a poultice against skin diseases. A decoction of the leaves and fruits is similarly effective. Stem and leaves are used as a medicine to depurate the skin of diseases. An infusion of the wood is used against malaria and scabies.
